0246 – Dealing with Christmas Trash Safely

The Christmas Season is a time filled with family, friends, joy, spirit, good food and of course gifts under the tree.  As with everything there must be balance in life and with all that good can come some evil too.  We talked about making sure our mindset is squared away around Christmas time in one of our recent podcasts, but in addition to our head being right, we have to make sure that our actions are squared away as well.  The last thing we want to do is to encourage scum to spoil our holiday believe me, dirt bags don’t need any encouragement.  Today we are going to talk about dealing with our Christmas trash safely.

0125 – FF LA Contest and Hotel Robbery Shooting

Man, what a weekend!  We got hit with a pretty decent storm Thursday night through Friday which creates a load of extra work for me and gets me behind in my game.  Add to that the fact that I had family come in to town for a family birthday and Friday’s Podcast just had to wait!

Had a great class Thursday night FSDUC-2.

Amanda at New Direction Photography in Auburn Twp. has been doing a great job spreading the word about SSA and I really appreciate it!

Today’s FF shows a hotel robbery that is foiled by a desk clerk with a handgun.

I want to point out a couple of excellent tactics that we see executed in this clip and a couple of things that we see that aren’t so excellent.

The Shooter

  • Transition from submission to domination
  • Lateral movement incorporated with the draw
  • Multiple, rapid shots on target
  • Closing in on the fleeing target is iffy except for one reason

The Clerk

  • Transition from submission to 911
  • Clearing guests from the lobby

The Guests

  • It is a hotel, maybe they were sleeping…
  • Pick your jaw up off the floor and do something for goodness sakes!
  • Create distance
  • Take cover
  • Fight

0120 – FF Mindset, Tactics, and Improvised Impact Weapon Defeat Armed Robber

James Yeager of Tactical Response uses a tagline that goes something like this:  Mindset, Tactics, Skill, Gear.  I’m guessing James didn’t come up with this concept, however he states it simply.   Make no mistake that he has the order correct.  When you check out today’s Friday Film you will see that mindset rules the day.

Miguel defends his business, his customers and his employees.

As we watch the video there are some great lessons to be learned:

  • Lets start with the cashier that is being held up
    • the dirt bag has her in a tough spot
    • she is probably right to comply
    • when the money hits the floor it is most likely a result of her body loosing the ability to perform fine motor skills as a physiological response to the threat
    • it also serves as a great distraction
    • know that you may experience similar difficulties in a violent encounter and train to exploit opportunities that this creates
    • kudos to the cashier she did a good job
  • now lets take a look at the second cashier
    • again, probably as good a job as can be done under the circumstances
    • she activates the stores alarm system (good job having that in place)
    • she doesn’t act beyond that
    • if she was in possession of a weapon and trained in its use, she was in an excellent position to deploy it
  • the customers reaction is completely normal but dumbfounds me every time I see it
    • customers stand, with jaws open and just watch
    • they don’t give themselves distance to protect themselves
    • some customers are so unaware that they continue to approach the register
  • Miguel
    • he is a whole different story
    • as soon as he understands that his business, employees, and customers are in jeopardy he acts
    • his actions are text book
      • he instantly engages
      • he employs the maximum level of force allowed by law
      • his actions decisively end the encounter

In war ”Out of every one hundred men, ten shouldn’t even be there, eighty are just targets, nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the one, one is a warrior, and he will bring the others back.”

Warrior Summit

I enjoy watching the many Youtube videos out there that help us to learn about violent encounters.  When there is a bit of entertainment value, I can’t resist sharing.

There are lots of lessons to be learned from today’s video.

  • Awareness
  • Immediate, justified, decisive action ends violence
  • It’s good to have other good people around to help out when you need it!
