0120 – FF Mindset, Tactics, and Improvised Impact Weapon Defeat Armed Robber

James Yeager of Tactical Response uses a tagline that goes something like this:  Mindset, Tactics, Skill, Gear.  I’m guessing James didn’t come up with this concept, however he states it simply.   Make no mistake that he has the order correct.  When you check out today’s Friday Film you will see that mindset rules the day.

Miguel defends his business, his customers and his employees.

As we watch the video there are some great lessons to be learned:

  • Lets start with the cashier that is being held up
    • the dirt bag has her in a tough spot
    • she is probably right to comply
    • when the money hits the floor it is most likely a result of her body loosing the ability to perform fine motor skills as a physiological response to the threat
    • it also serves as a great distraction
    • know that you may experience similar difficulties in a violent encounter and train to exploit opportunities that this creates
    • kudos to the cashier she did a good job
  • now lets take a look at the second cashier
    • again, probably as good a job as can be done under the circumstances
    • she activates the stores alarm system (good job having that in place)
    • she doesn’t act beyond that
    • if she was in possession of a weapon and trained in its use, she was in an excellent position to deploy it
  • the customers reaction is completely normal but dumbfounds me every time I see it
    • customers stand, with jaws open and just watch
    • they don’t give themselves distance to protect themselves
    • some customers are so unaware that they continue to approach the register
  • Miguel
    • he is a whole different story
    • as soon as he understands that his business, employees, and customers are in jeopardy he acts
    • his actions are text book
      • he instantly engages
      • he employs the maximum level of force allowed by law
      • his actions decisively end the encounter

In war ”Out of every one hundred men, ten shouldn’t even be there, eighty are just targets, nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the one, one is a warrior, and he will bring the others back.”

0040 – Armed Robbery Gunfight Video Analysis

Rest In Peace WCO David Grove

You tube provides a tremendous amount of entertainment for people, but those that don’t take advantage of the educational opportunities afforded by you tube are missing the boat.

With proper analysis we can use vide clips fro Youtube in the same fashion that LEO’s use dash camera videos.

This video shows a gunfight going exactly how we want it to go.  Take these tips from the video:

  1. When possible, have your gun in your hand when the gunfight begins.
  2. Get off the x!
  3. When it is time to fight, flip the switch and fight.

A gun fight isn’t always going to go like this one.  Whenever we deal with violence there is a risk of injury or death.  Our job is to seek to understand violence so that we can as quickly as possible begin to dominate the encounter and thereby reduce those risks as much as possible.
