0278 – Three Reasons I’ll Be Going to ‘See Act of Valor’ Again

This past weekend my wife and I found ourselves in a situation where we had built in baby sitting, a movie thearter close by, and a movie that I really wanted to see opening at the silver screen.  We put the kids to bed and took off to see ‘Act of Valor.’  It was worth the $23.00 it cost us to go to the show.  Of course ‘Act of Valor’ has been garnering a lot of attention as it is a story about SEALs starring SEALs in a time where America is in love with SEALs.  It seems like all is right in the world.  I hate to be just like everybody else, but I’m going to do it any way and tell you 3 reasons I will be heading back to the theater to catch ‘Act of Valor’ again.

0275 – The App That MUST be on your Smart Phone

I have a few apps on my iPhone. Some are for fun, some are for productivity and some are for something in between. Last week I got an email from Steve and one of the things he talked about was the apps he finds useful on his smart phone. Steve mentioned several apps. Some were apps that were installed on my phone and some were not. I immediately checked out the Hands-only CPR app from the American Heart Assoc and it seemed pretty neat. As I dove in deeper to the app thinking about a podcast topic I found a $1.99 gold mine. Yup, two bucks for the best, most important app that has to be on your phone. Today we are going to look in detail at the American Heart Association Pocket First Aid and CPR App

0268 – Interview with Zach of Helix Arms

Today we wrap up our official SHOT Show coverage for 2012. Keep in mind that there will be more information continuing to come from SHOT Show as we have guns and gear on the way from manufacturers for testing and evaluation. In addition, we forged relationships at the show that will continue to be important throughout the year.

Today’s show showcases the kinds of connections we can make at a gig like SHOT. Today we will talk with Zach of Helix Arms. We got a chance to press palms with Zach for the first time at SHOT and there has been nothing but shenanigans since.

0251 – Make Note of AED Locations

Folks like you and me pride ourselves on our situational awareness.  We are sitting with our backs against the wall watching the exits.  We are leaving extra space at stop lights and avoiding the curb lane.  We know where the exits are and we notice people that have their hoods up.  Who looks nervous and who has their hands in their pockets.  All of these things that we notice could come in handy when we find ourselves in that nasty situation.  But what things are we missing.  You folks know that I believe that it is going to happen to us eventually.  We WILL be involved in a life and death scenario, but I feel like sometimes folks spend too much time on the sexy stuff.  I get it.  I ordered a defensive pistol with a red dot optic on it from Templar Custom Arms today.  Sexy hot.  But when will I need to make a head shot with my pistol from 20 yards?  Would it be more likely that I might need some medical skills, some defensive driving skills, some conflict mediation skills?  Today we are going to take a look at an item that we need to add to our awareness checklist.

0137 – Impressions of a First Time Shooter

One of the common themes of my life has been teaching.  No matter what I get involved in I end up teaching it.  I have taught lots of fun stuff throughout my life but today I got to teach a common topic for me to someone I NEVER thought I would have a chance to teach.  My sister asked me to take her shooting.  I was thrilled and jumped at the chance.

I wanted to take some time to talk with her about her experience.

  • Tell us about your previous experience with guns.
  • Why did it take you till this point in your life to want to shoot a gun.
  • Before we went to the range, what were you thinking, wondering, excited about, maybe even concerned about?
  • Before we headed to the range we took just a few minutes to talk about safety.  What are your thoughts about safe gun handling.
  • We went to an indoor range.  What were your thoughts about that experience from a service standpoint, etc.
  • I made the choice for you shoot a Glock 19 which is chambered in 9mm.  What did you think about this pistol.
  • I also offered the chance for you to shoot my Glock 21 which is a .45.  What did you think about the differences in the two guns?
  • If you had our shooting excursion to do over again what would you change.
  • Will you ever do it again?
  • What is your next step in shooting?
