0241 – The Throw Away Wallet

We know that the best way to avoid the consequences of violence is to avoid violence all together.  If a dirtbag on the street decides to take my wallet and I truly believe that giving up the wallet will end the situation, I have no problem giving up the wallet.  All that the wallet contains is a small amount of cash.  Would you pay $100 to avoid getting hit, kicked, cut, shot or stabbed?  I would.  Even when I dominate that conflict there can be negative consequences.  I don’t want those negative consequences.  It is for this reason that I carry a Throw Away Wallet.

0229 – Avoiding Civil Unrest

When we think about our own personal safety we have to consider it on two fronts.  First the severity of a particular dangerous scenario and second, the likely hood that the scenario will actually happen.  Many people have been predicting since the 2008 financial meltdown that we may be facing a threat to our personal safety and security in the form of civil unrest.  I can’t disagree more with these folks.  We aren’t facing a new threat of civil unrest.  It has been there since the beginning of civilization.  We might have a fresh motive that hasn’t been around for a while, but the threat isn’t new, it isn’t necessarily even greater, it just is.  We saw in the past week that mobs can be a problem when the goons in Oakland made it clear.  This serves as a reminder that whatever the consequences are from civil unrest it isn’t just plausible and possible, it is likely.

I want to make clear that when I talk about mob violence today I have no intention of making political statements.  In this into I referred to the individuals involved in the violence in Oakland as goons.  Understand, I meant it.  The word I used to describe their behavior has nothing to do with the political views they espouse it is simply in reference to their thuggish behavior.  I don’t care if you support The Occupy movement or if you detest it.  The simple fact is when you launch explosives at police, the actions are criminal.  Don’t make the mistake of turning my non-political comments into anything other than commentary on how to live a safer life.
