Happy Memorial Day?

Memorial DayI’m hanging out at a Memorial Day BBQ, spending time with friends, eating food and drinking drinks and wondering what to post about Memorial Day. It has become quite a contentious holiday.

A decade ago, anything was good to go. But today is different. We have reached a critical mass of people that really understand Memorial Day. I’m not in that group. I mean, I get it. I understand. But I don’t weep on Memorial Day. There are good men that do. For good reason. And that makes saying, “Happy Memorial Day!” a mixed bag. Really.

Read this. And remember what Memorial Day is all about.

Having gone by the graves of some young men I knew over the past few days, I am brought back to reality what Memorial Day is truly about: remembering the ultimate sacrifice so many have given in order for others to have the freedoms we have, and helping people in far-away lands. I have no qualms about a barbecue, family gathering or other celebration, but at the very least a moment’s pause to reflect on those lives is, I believe, good for the soul and good for our nation. Keeps me grounded. My wife and sons all act similarly, for which I am grateful. I wish more would do the same.
